Medieval Whet Stone - Viking Sharpening Stone

As a Bushcraft Instructor and Viking Reenactor I wanted to make some authentic medieval Whet Stones.

Whetstone Details:

As they are made and polished by hand all details are estimated.
400grit (ish)
7x2x1cm (ish)
Stone - Millstone Grit

Whet Stone History:

The word Whet actually means ‘to sharpen a blade’ rather than wetting the stone before you use it!

Quarried from my own garden! Luckily I live in an area that has Millstone Grit which is great for Whet Stones.

Was pleasantly surprised. Was much more substantial than expected. I replaced the jute with a leather cord. It looks very nice.
It's found a home in my muzzleloading shooting pouch. Does an excellent job of touching up my patch knife.

I must be honest, I was a little skeptical when I first received the Whetstone. It seemed to have too many "pot-holes" on the faces of it where it could have been lapped a little flatter. But this was quickly remedied when I lapped it on my diamond Stone. It also produced a wonderful slurry when I did so and soaked it long enough in water as you advised. Overall I am quite surprised and pleased with the way it's particular abrasive Grit works on the steel.
