A Viking drinking horn tankard hand carved with Yggdrasil — the World Tree at the centre of all Norse cosmology.

The Story

Yggdrasil is the immense sacred ash tree that connects the nine worlds of Norse mythology. Its roots reach down into the wells of wisdom, fate, and the realm of the dead. Its branches stretch up into the heavens. Odin hung himself from Yggdrasil for nine days and nine nights, sacrificing himself to himself, to gain the knowledge of the runes. Squirrels run its length carrying messages between the eagle at its crown and the serpent Niðhöggr gnawing at its roots. The tree is tended by the Norns — Urðr, Verðandi, and Skuld — who weave the fates of gods and men alike. At Ragnarök, Yggdrasil will shudder but survive, sheltering the two humans who will repopulate the world.

To drink from a horn carved with Yggdrasil is to drink at the axis of all things.

Horns in History

Drinking horns were used throughout Europe — by Vikings, Greeks, Romans, Germanic tribes, and Saxons — up to around the 12th century, when pottery became more widespread.

Care Instructions

• Rinse with warm soapy water after each use
• Towel or air dry completely before storing
• Apply a food-grade oil such as mineral oil periodically
• If persistent odour, soak with white vinegar and water for a couple of hours
• Do not use a dishwasher or hot water
