Viking Drinking Horn — Thor's Fishing Trip

One of the most dramatic tales in Norse mythology — and it involves a fishing rod, a severed ox head, and the World Serpent.

Thor visits the giant Hymir and they head out to sea to fish. Thor tears off the head of one of Hymir's prized bulls to use as bait. With it, he hooks Jörmungandr — the giant world-encircling serpent — and hauls him toward the surface. The thunder god strains against the creature; the thrashing of the serpent sends giant waves crashing over the boat and “all the ancient earth” shakes. Hymir panics and cuts the line. The serpent escapes. Thor is furious.

They would meet again at Ragnarök.
