The penannular pin — an open ring with a free-moving spike — is one of the oldest and most practical fastenings in Celtic and Norse dress, in use from the Iron Age through the medieval period. This version is decorated throughout with Celtic knotwork: an unbroken interlace on the ring, a teardrop knotwork terminal on the pin head, and flowing knot panels at the terminals.

Worn at the shoulder to fasten a cloak or cape, or used to pin a scarf or shawl.
