Viking Drinking Horn Tankard — Tyr & Fenrir

A Viking drinking horn tankard carved with one of the most dramatic tales in Norse mythology — the Binding of Fenrir Wolf by the Gods.

Designed by Paul at Bushman Survival and crafted to his specification.

The Story

As Loki's son grows, the Gods begin to fear him. They try to bind him with chains he easily breaks. Turning to the Dwarves, they commission a magical binding material. Fenrir smells a trap and agrees to be bound only if one of the Gods places their hand in his mouth as a show of good faith. It is Tyr — God of War and Fenrir's closest companion — who steps forward. Fenrir is bound and cannot escape. When he realises the Gods have no intention of releasing him, he bites down on the hand of the man who had fed and cared for him. Tyr loses his hand. Fenrir is bound until Ragnarök.

Horns in History

Drinking horns were used throughout Europe — by Vikings, Greeks, Romans, Germanic tribes, and Saxons — up to around the 12th century, when pottery became more widespread.

Care Instructions

• Rinse with warm soapy water after each use
• Towel or air dry completely before storing
• Apply a food-grade oil such as mineral oil periodically
• If persistent odour, soak with white vinegar and water for a couple of hours
• Do not use a dishwasher or hot water
