The older kuksa designs were chunkier, deeper, and built to last a lifetime. This is that version.

Hand-turned on a lathe in my South Wales workshop from birch, these hold approximately 350ml — a proper measure for a morning coffee, an evening dram, or a cold drink at a reenactment. Hand-turned, not machined — each one finished by hand, which means natural variation between pieces. The shape is closer to the traditional Sami and Norse originals than the slimmer modern versions: a deeper bowl, a more substantial handle, a cup that feels like it means something in your hand.

The Kuksa — known as Guksi in Finnish and kåsa in Swedish — has roots stretching back almost 3,000 years through Scandinavian and Sami culture. Similar carved vessels have been found in Viking burials. This is the real thing, not a souvenir.

Choose Your Style

  • Standard — £25 — clean, smooth birch. The purist's choice.
  • Grooves — £27 — chunkier handle with decorative groove detailing. More grip, more character.
