Hand-carved from real oxen bone, these rune sets are available in both Elder Futhark (pre-Viking age, the original runes Odin first learned) and Younger Futhark (most commonly used from 600 AD onwards through the Viking Age). Each set is unique — no two pieces are identical.

The Story of the Runes

Runes historically appear around the early Bronze Age, with original markings found in various caves. The word rune originates from Old Norse, meaning "secret knowledge and wisdom" — fitting given the legend of how Odin first learned them.

Odin hung himself from the World Tree, Yggdrasil, for nine stormy nights — speared to the great ash by his own spear. Below him was the Well of Urd, the source of wisdom, guarded by the three Norns who weaved everyone's fates. On the ninth day, at the brink of death, Odin saw the shapes and understood their deep meanings.
