Almost a metre of hand-carved Viking axe. The Double Bit is simply one of the most impressive pieces I make — a double-headed bearded axe in 5160 carbon steel, carved to any design you want.

I'll work closely with you on the design. Every element is hand-drawn, then hand-carved into the steel and handle. Dragons, wolves, Viking themes, Iron Maiden, film themes — if I can draw it, I can carve it. No computers, no lasers, no stencils.

A Bit of History

Hand axes have been around for 1.8 million years — that's 1.2 million years before people. Double-headed axes were especially popular as felling axes in the 1800s. As weapons, they were typically used with a spike on one side rather than two blades, allowing them to be used against heavily armoured opponents.

Care Instructions

  • Carbon steel will rust — oil after every use. Mineral oil works on the steel, handle, and leather sheath.
  • If storing in the leather sheath, oil first then wrap in clingfilm to prevent rust.
