Almost a metre of hand-carved steel. The Double Bit is the most ambitious piece I make — a double-headed bearded axe in 5160 carbon steel, fully carved to your design from head to handle. Nothing is left plain. Nothing is repeated.
Every axe begins with a conversation. You tell me what you want — the theme, the imagery, the details that matter to you. I hand-draw the design, then carve it directly into the steel and the ash handle. No computers. No lasers. No stencils. Every line is made by hand.
Dragons, wolves, Norse mythology, Iron Maiden, film themes, family crests, memorial pieces — if I can draw it, I can carve it. Most commissions take up to ten weeks. That’s not a delay. That’s the time it takes to do this properly.
Designed by Paul at Bushman Survival and crafted to his specification.

A Bit of History
Hand axes have been around for 1.8 million years. Double-headed axes were prized as felling tools in the 1800s and as weapons against heavily armoured opponents — a spike on one side, a blade on the other, built for the worst of situations. This one is built for a different kind of legacy.
Care
- Carbon steel will rust — oil after every use. Mineral oil works on the steel, handle, and leather sheath.
- If storing in the sheath, oil first then wrap in clingfilm to prevent rust.
