As a Bushcraft Instructor and Viking reenactor, I wanted to make truly authentic medieval whet stones — not mass-produced imports, but hand-made from real Millstone Grit, quarried from my own garden in South Wales.
Millstone Grit is exactly the type of stone Vikings and medieval craftsmen would have used to keep their blades sharp. These are the real thing.
Details
Stone: Millstone Grit
Grit: approximately 400
Size: approximately 7 x 2 x 1cm
Hand-cut and polished — each one is unique
Use dry or with a little water or oil
How to Use
Work the blade along the stone at a consistent angle — typically 15–20 degrees for knives, slightly higher for axes. A few strokes on each side is all it takes to refresh an edge. Finish on a leather strop for a truly keen edge.
A Note on Whet Stones
The word whet actually means to sharpen a blade — not to wet the stone before use! Though a drop of water or oil does help keep the surface clean as you work.
Whet stones have been used across Europe for thousands of years. Viking craftsmen, warriors, and farmers all carried a personal sharpening stone — a sharp blade was a matter of survival.
As each stone is hand-cut and polished, size, shape and texture will vary slightly. That's what makes them authentic.
Was pleasantly surprised. Was much more substantial than expected. I replaced the jute with a leather cord. It looks very nice.
It's found a home in my muzzleloading shooting pouch. Does an excellent job of touching up my patch knife.
I bought several sets of the hinges and locks for some Norse style chests I was making. All I can say is this craftsman is excellent, the hinges work really well and are in keeping with my project. The lock and key is to the same superb standard, work well and really finish a sea chest off perfectly. I'm very happy with my purchases, fast delivery and well packaged. Excellent value for money considering the work that must go into these items.
Had a little incident of getting the wrong order but the seller was so nice about sorting it. Both the wrong order and the order place came very quick and are very well made! Absolutely recommend!!
