The carving on this horn is taken directly from a medieval church wood carving — one of the many places the Sigurd legend was preserved in stone and timber across Scandinavia and the British Isles long after the Viking Age ended.
Viking Horn Tankard - Sigurd and the Dragon
One of the greatest tales in Norse mythology - the slaying of Fáfnir the dragon by the hero Sigurd.
The Story
Fáfnir was no ordinary dragon. He was once a dwarf who murdered his own father to claim a cursed hoard of gold. Consumed by greed, he transformed into a great serpentine dragon and coiled himself around the treasure, poisoning the land around him.
Sigurd, the greatest of the Volsung heroes, was tasked with slaying him. Guided by Odin and the smith Regin - Fáfnir's own brother - Sigurd forged the legendary sword Gram and dug a pit in the path the dragon used to reach the river. As Fáfnir crawled over the pit, Sigurd drove his sword upward into the serpent's unprotected belly.
As Fáfnir lay dying, he warned Sigurd that the gold was cursed and would bring ruin to all who possessed it. Sigurd took it anyway. Tasting the dragon's blood, he gained the ability to understand the speech of birds - who warned him that Regin planned to betray him. Sigurd acted first.

Horns in History
Drinking horns were used throughout Europe by Vikings, Greeks, Romans, Germanic tribes, and Saxons up to around the 12th century. Horn tankards are a staple of Viking culture, widely depicted in Game of Thrones, Vikings, and The Lord of the Rings.
